DOMINIC WAXING LYRICAL X MR McFALL’S CHAMBER STRING QUARTET

“Calming, intimate, never too bleak or cloying, it’s a rarefied world ****” Martin Aston, MOJO

For the first and last time, Dominic Waxing Lyrical present their highly acclaimed new album Diminuet and greatest hits performed with Mr McFall’s Chamber.

Diminuet, released on Innes Orr Records in November 2024, but as yet unperformed, was recorded in Indianapolis. To describe this masterwork, we can do no better than quote this efusive review from Gareth Thomson in Rock n Reel…

“It’s an intriguing and bracing project for fans of Tindersticks, Frightened Rabbit and King Creosote. Part chamber recital, the key element is Dominic Harris’s forceful, half-sung voice, like a meeting of David Gedge and Joseph Porter. Lyrical sparks fly and Harris searches for light amid desolation, perhaps to quell his own raging storms.

“The music is soaked in reflective sadness to reveal the alienation of a solitary wanderer, a man consumed with bygone visions. On opener Girandole Harris declaims his wintry lyricism over biting strings and snappy piano, as the piece lurches into mediaeval woodwind. Rock Pool then has a discussion with nature backed by hoary acoustics and more sleeted violin work. It’s A Long Way To Come dances in with a summery lilt à la Pentangle, albeit with minor chords gnawing at the revelry.

“Prague/Dear Amjad has a Zennish bell-like ambience, then zigzags into elegant strings, and Harris’ manic memories of crop circle kisses and smashed signposts. A gothic glockenspiel underscores the darkly tabular narrative of Mad Bird, maritime mysteries gain a somber grandeur on The Yard Arm while Guite Nacht finds the tragic aura of Franz Schubert’s song imbued with a folkish charm.”

This will be a very special night indeed and a rare chance to see DWL and Mr McFall’s Chamber String Quartet playing together live, a must see for fans of both bands.
