The Pygmies are Edinburgh’s finest afro, Latin, ska-jazz, bues and soul band. Comprising three saxophonists: Steve Kettley on tenor and soprano, Barney Barnett on baritone and Andy Johnstone on alto, they make a great noise and really know how to get the party started. Their material is made up of original self-penned tunes, and more obscure music by the likes of Abdullah Ibrahim, the Brecker Brothers, Oscar Hernandez, The Skatalites, Eddie Harris and … Lionel Bart (yes really!). We’re looking forward to them opening up our very first benefit gig on Friday 18 April. Here’s why Steve Kettley reckons the band were happy to give up their Friday night for us:
“Edinburgh has a huge shortage of decent venues, regardless of size. The ‘Douglas’s House’ gigs have been a godsend to the local and touring music scenes – a warm, friendly atmosphere; appreciative, listening audience; quality PA system etc. We are delighted to help, in a small way, to make a permanent venue with these same attributes a much-needed reality.”
